Najpierw luterański biskup Oddur Gottskálsson przetłumaczył Nowy Testament (w 1540 roku), a ponad czterdzieści lat później ukazało się tłumaczenie całego Pisma Świętego, pod redakcją Guðbrandura Þorlákssona (1584).

Żeby żyć i pracować na Islandii, szczególnie poza obszarem stolicy. W Reykjaviku pracuje bardzo dużo osób, które nie znają języka islandzkiego i obsługują klientów tylko w języku angielskim. Podczas kilku wyjazdów do stolicy zdarzało się, że kupując kawę, piwo, czy pieczywo w centrum miasta, nigdy nie byłam obsłużona w języku islandzkim. Jeśli ktoś nie planuje zostawać na Islandii długo, realnie nie trzeba uczyć się języka, ponieważ Islandczycy mówią świetnie po angielsku. Na przykład w urzędach i innych oficjalnych instytucjach nie będzie problemu z załatwieniem różnych spraw.
Islandczycy często są zamknięci na „obcych”
W innych obszarach kraju temat jest dość skomplikowany. Na przykład na północy bardzo ciężko zintegrować się z mieszkańcami, nawet próbując rozmawiać po islandzku. Dopiero dość płynna znajomość islandzkiego może dać szansę na stworzenie bliższych relacji z lokalną społecznością.
Coraz więcej angielszczyzny
Ponad to Islandczycy coraz częściej wtrącają angielskie słowa mówiąc potocznym językiem. Islandzkie dzieci między sobą rozmawiają po angielsku, nawet jeśli nie ma takiej potrzeby, wiele sprzętów nie ma opcji wyboru języka islandzkiego. Literatura światowa nie jest tłumaczona na wielką skalę na język islandzki, chociaż to powoli się zmienia i coraz więcej tytułów można znaleźć w islandzkim tłumaczeniu. Jednak książki w innych językach są często tańsze niż islandzkie odpowiedniki, dlatego wiele osób czyta głównie w języku angielskim.
